If you’ve been following me for years, you probably know that I’ve been tending a garden for years.
This year, we decided to scale up our garden—not just the size of it but also the time we can spend on it. Lots of weekend garden landlords in Korea plough up the land every spring so it was impossible for us to grow trees and perennial plants.
So we approached to the landlord with whom we’ve been dealing for years with an offer: how about if we rent a corner of the land and you just leave that corner to us, not ploughing it every spring?
The landlord accepted our offer but it took a pretty long time for them to prepare the land this time. It was a mess with agricultural wastes and dead plants so we need one last plough.
It began at the end of March…
In the beginning, there was nothing. The soil seemed terrible with various wastes including plastics farmers use, so we decided to build raised beds.and a small greenhouse!I was getting nervous because it began to rainVictory after all!The members of the community compost garden also lent a hand.Later we moved the greenhous to the left corner.Storages and a BBQ grill soon followed. How beautiful.A look from another sideWith friend’s help, we got dozens of pallets from a factory. At first we wanted to make all our raised beds from the recycled pallets but due to the delay in the ploughing, we had to build first several beds from ready-made kits.About 50 pallets! So I bought another tools (again)It was my first time to use circular saw and it was fun.I don’t have much time for an elegant design… just cut them up and fasten them up.Later I realized why people use clamps… (lowest one: before I realized, middle one: after I realized)We even dig up the hill and built raised beds on it.The soil was like muds dried up hard with rocks and plastic wastes. I experienced what backbreaking labor was…Almost complete.I also built shoddy walls to screen other weekend farmers’ plastic wastes from our sight and for bean stems to climb onWe now grow various types of tomatoes, greenbeans, and flowers.
Come visit our garden, we have the BBQ grill ready for you 😉
