Former Minister of Unification says German, Vietnamese models won’t work in Korea
What is the proper path toward Korean unification? The minister of unification under former President Roh Moo-hyun has explored history and found examples of what won’t work.
Namely, Chung Dong-yong said that it cannot viably be achieved through force, as it was in Vietnam, or through absorption, as in Germany.
However, Chung said that Korea has a unique asset in its favor, in that it has a functioning industrial complex at Kaesong where North and South Korea are already working together. By expanding on this idea, and acknowledging North Korea’s needs, he said progress can be made.
